As we hiked the MD portion of the C&O Canal
Tow Path, this volunteer bike police man appeared and gave us quite a bit of
information regarding the history, length and routes to travel on the tow path.
He indicated that a person could now travel the 186 miles from Georgetown near
Washington DC to Columbia, MD on the C&O Canal Tow Path, then continue another
120 miles to Pittsburg, PA on a Rails-to-Trails Greenway recently completed.
This gentleman indicated he was going on the trip with a group the following
week. Daughter Sara and sister Judi are in the picture with “Dave” the
policeman.

A picture taken on
the winding staircase of the beautiful Blackburn Mansion on the Potomac. The
building is now the C&O Canal National Park Headquarters and a wonderful place
to take a rest from long hikes or bike rides along the tow path. It is situated
on the MD side of the Potomac across the river from Shepherdstown, WV.

A visit to Gerald and Ruth Hatcher, AT hikers
and old friends of our family during the time we lived in Ranson, WV near
Harpers Ferry. The Hatchers are planning a hike of the AT once Gerald retires.

Scenes from Harpers Ferry’s historic Hilltop House Hotel overlooking the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac River gorges. Beautiful view of the AT hiking gap can be seen behind Sara and Judi. Absolutely gorgeous view, but the hotel is a bit run down from it’s over 100 years of operation.

Dinner at a Washington DC bistro before
returning to my AT hike. I celebrated my short time visit with Judi and Sara and
two of Sara’s friends (Michael Hendley and Hanna Giles).
